Summary2The following article describes grade averaging and rounding options in MMS Generations (MMSGE) and the Web Portals.
Prior to Implementation

Confirm that the user has access to the Administrator Portal and MMS Generations. The following resolution includes grade rounding options in the Admin Portal and MMS Generations, and will impact the grade book options for teachers in the Teacher Portal Grade Book.

Resolution
  1. Admin Portal > Grade Book > Setup Functions> Configure Averages – General Rules

  • If you are configured for numeric grades, you may use Unrounded Averaging. This feature is not applicable for those who have the grade book configured for letter grading.

  • Use Unrounded Averaging for courses using numeric grades? By default, this option is set to No.  The teacher grade book calculates and stores both a rounded marking period grade (e.g., '89' - the grade that appears on the report card) and an unrounded marking period grade (e.g., '88.7915' - this grade does not appear on the report card).  This option determines whether averaging operations use either the rounded or unrounded marking period grade during computations.

  • If you leave this option set to No, the teacher gradebook calculations for Current Final Average, Semester and Final Averages use rounded marking period grades.

  • If you select Yes for this option, the teacher gradebook calculations for Current Final Average, Semester and Final Averages use unrounded marking period grades.

NOTE: When Unrounded averaging is set to Yes, teacher grade book averaging is based on the unrounded value of each marking period grade, allowing a greater degree of precision with numeric grades. The extra degree of precision offered by Unrounded Averaging will have an effect only for marking period grades computed by the grade book, based on assignment scores. The only rounding that occurs is a whole number, rounded at the midpoint of the school year, for the Current Final Average or Semester or Final Average calculated. When a marking period grade is assigned manually through the teacher grade book or MMS Generations, only a rounded version of the grade can be stored.

Example: A grade of 94.50 displays as 94 on report cards. The reason is because the 94.50 is calculated based on an unrounded grade, e.g. 94.4770, which is less than 95 when converted to a whole number. Teachers have the ability to change the grade in the Teacher Portal > Grade Book > Assign Grades > Final Grade Entry and there is an option to lock the grade, as illustrated in the following image.

  • Can teachers compute and post semester and final averages:When this option is set to Yes, teachers will have the ability to compute and store the student’s actual semester and final average. Additionally, a Compute and Store Final Averages option will be available in the Teacher Portal (Grade Book >Assign Grades > Final Grade Entry).

  • Can teachers modify formulas for Averaging: When this option is set to Yes, teachers will have the ability to change weights of marking periods that are used to compute averages for a class (e.g. marking period weights may be 1.00 units and exams may be .50 units).

  • When this option is set to Yes, teachers will have an additional option in the Teacher Portal (Grade Book >Grade Book Setup>Configure Averaging).

NOTE: Teacher Grade Book uses the averaging and weighting setup from the Admin Portal unless the teacher chooses to override those settings for a course. The teacher’s weighting settings take precedence when they are available, with the exception for the current final average if enabled.

  1. MMS Generations > Grade Reporting Jobs > Operations > Compute Term & Semester Averages

  • Use Unrounded Averaging: when this option is set to Yes, computing averages is based on unrounded averages when available.

  • If a numeric grade is changed in MMSGE >Student Grade Editor or MMSGE > Grade Entry by Class, the whole number grade is stored in the rounded grade field (GRD.GRADE) and also in the unrounded grade field (GRD.GRADE_UR) because a grade change in MMSGE takes precedence over the grade computed in the teacher grade book.
